A Difficult airway exists when an experienced airway manager anticipates or encounters difficulty with any or all of laryngoscopy or tracheal intubation, face-mask ventilation (FMV), supraglottic airway (SGA) use, or eFONA.

Difficult airway crisis might occur at any time and can be unanticipated either in Emergency Department, general wards or even Operating Theaters.

Poor handling of such crisis might contribute to morbidity and mortality with high risk of medical litigations.

Anaesthetists play important roles in recognizing the features of difficult airway and formulating the step-wise approach based on Difficult Airway Society guidelines.

Based on National Audit of Anaesthetic Airway Management of 14 ministry hospitals in Malaysia, the overall incidence of major airway complications from this audit is 1054 per 100,000 GA. Reported mortality rate due to airway complications was 1 per 180,000 General Anaesthesia.

Deficiencies relating to judgement, communication, planning, equipment, and training are the factors contributing to poor outcomes associated with airway management.

Therefore, airway teaching and training sessions in 2024 lead by Dr Afifah Ab Manas, Dr Mohd Shahrizam and Dr Izzati is held for medical officers and paramedics training in 6 months.
